Snoop Dogg

Born: October 20, 1971
Long Beach, CA, USA

Snoop began rapping with friend Warren G. when he was a young child. He grew up with his mother and two half-brothers in L.A., and enjoyed a successful career in school as a student and an athlete. His association with the Crips would end that, however, and he would eventually begin committing crimes to maintain his lifestyle. He landed in jail after he graduated from high school, but it would be a turning point for the Dogg. Even though it would take a few years to sink in, Snoop eventually took the advise of his fellow prisoners who thought he was too talented to be in jail. He called his old friend Warren G. and gave him his tape. Warren G. gave the tape to his brother, Dr. Dre, who valued what he heard from the instant he played it, and he began promoting Snoop right away. Snoop appeared on the soundtrack album Deep Cover in 1992, as well as on Dre’s The Chronic. The monster hit “Nuthin’ But a G Thang” quickly launched Snoop into mega-stardom. He released his first album in 1992 entitled Doggystyle which spun several hits including “Doggy Dogg World,” “Gin and Juice,” and “Who Am I.” He won awards and acclaims for his music and videos, and he was on his way to becoming a paramount figure in the hip hop world.

At the same time, however, Snoop was going through many personal problems. He and his bodyguard, McKinley Lee, was arrested and charged with the murder of a rival gang member. Although he was eventually found not guilty, it was an emotionally stressful time for Snoop and company. When he got out from under the stress of the trial, he went back to the studio to make The Doggfather, which would spin out more top ten hits. But, just as he was about to release the album, his friend and label mate Tupac Shakur was gunned down in a gang-style shootout in Las Vegas. Snoop dedicated his new album to Shakur, and it debuted at number 1. Tupac’s murder shed a very negative light on Death Row Records and Death Row CEO Suge Knight. Not long after the Tupac tragedy, fellow rapper the Notorious B.I.G. was also shot and killed. Snoop cancelled his impending tour out of respect and fear for his life, and eventually decided to tour with Lollapalooza. He began accepting movie roles, and he married his girlfriend. Snoop was turning his life around.

The changes he was making in his life lead to a decision that shocked many in the hip hop world. Snoop announced that he was leaving Death Row Records, due to the troubles that Death Row had been going through. His allegations of mismanagement, coupled with the legal troubles the label had been going through, were only compounded by the fact that Suge Knight had been indicted on racketeering charges and was in jail, and Dr. Dre had already left the label for greener pastures. Snoop signed with Master P’s No Limits label, and shortened his name to Snoop Dogg. In 1998, he put out his first album with No Limits, The Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told, which debuted at number 1 and confirmed Snoop’s stardom. The following year, he released No Limit Top Dogg, and Dead Man Walkin’ was released in the fall of 2000. Many speculated the latter to be symbolic of Snoop’s fears involving Suge Knight’s release from prison. Suge’s Death Row Records website indicated the intentions of forcing Snoop to fulfill his contract.

In the meantime, Snoop has managed to stay busy and consistently release albums, spreading his rapping ability around and mixing with several different genres. Snoop is on the forefront of the rapping community, and has shed his gangsta rap skin to become an intelligent, positive force.
