Maynard James KeenanBorn: April 17, 1964 USA | |
Maynard was born James H. Keenan. His family was a semi-religious one, who moved around frequently in his later prepratory years, and Maynard went to a number of schools. He had always had an affinity for music, and preferred bands like KISS in his youth. In 1982, he graduated and went into the army. Eventually, however, he left the military to go to art school, and moved to L.A. His interest in music had never died down. Maynard played for two bands while he was in high school, C.A.D. and the Texans, before Tool was created. C.A.D. produced the album Fingernails, on which he was the vocalist, and he played the bass guitar while he was with the Texans. He met his next door neighbor, Danny Carey, a drummer who was quite talented, and eventually they would go on to form Tool. Currently, Keenan is still very much involved with Tool, as well as Billy Howerdel's A Perfect Circle. He also did the vocals for a song on the KISS tribute album, Kiss My Ass. He did the Kiss classic "Calling Doctor Love." He is also involved with an extremely underground band called Tapeworm.
- One of his high school bands was called Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty.
- Maynard sang backup vocals on Rage Against the Machine's first album, a tract called "Know Your Enemy".
