George Strait

Born: May 18, 1952
Pearsall, TX, USA

After a traditional upbringing in Texas, Strait gave college a try, then gave marriage a try, and then joined the army. In Hawaii, he decided to give singing a try, too, and he auditioned for the army-sponsored country and western band. After he was discharged from the Army, Strait put together his own band in Texas. Several unsuccessful trips to Nashville later, Strait had earned his degree in agriculture and was about to give up his dream to become a country-western star, when his wife talked him into going to Nashville once more. This time, he got an audition with MCA Records, and was signed almost immediately. Since 1981, George Strait has become a staple on country radio stations, of both traditional and contemporary playlists. He has won every award that the Country Music Association offers. George Strait is one of the only new country artists that has kept it traditional, with a lot of lap steel and fiddle, and deep honky-tonk roots.
