Bruce Gary

Born: April 7, 1952
Burbank, CA, USA

Perhaps best known for his work with the platinum selling band The Knack and the unforgettable Drum Beat of "My Sharona" which was Bruce's invention. However, this two-time Grammy nominee has had a successful career apart from The Knack, as a performer, producer and recording artist. His body of work crosses all musical styles and genres.

Bruce has recorded with The Doors' guitarist Robbie Krieger, Cream's Jack Bruce, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Albert Collins, Dr. John, The Ventures, Rod Stewart, Bette Midler, Love with Arthur Lee, Yoko Ono and many others.

Bruce toured with Albert Collins (1968-72), Dr. John (1976), Love (1976-78) Jack Bruce (1974-'88) The Knack ('78-'96) Bob Dylan (1981) The Ventures in Japan (1996) Robby Krieger Band (1977-'91).

In addition to his recording & touring work, Bruce has developed a successful career "behind the boards". Bruce has produced a series of critically acclaimed records by Jimi Hendrix. This output includes two boxed sets. "Lifelines", developed from a Gary produced six hour Westwood One radio broadcast that chronicles Hendrix's life & recording output. The second, "Stages, captures 4 Hendrix concerts. The Gary co-produced, Hendrix "Blues" compilation was chosen by Guitar Player magazine as it's best historic/reissue of the year. Gary also worked on Hendrix's "Winterland" releases, Woodstock and "Voodoo Soup".

Bruce also had a chance to use his blues roots by having the honor to produce sessions with 2 blues legends, Albert King("Red House" 1991) and John Lee Hooker("Variations On A Theme" 1987).

In 1996, Bruce produced & played on a session for The Ventures ("Cry For A Shadow" for the CD "New Depths")

Other recent projects include the completion of his very well received drum-loop CD, "Bruce Gary's Drum Vocabulary", a performance of "The End" with Robby Krieger included on the DVD "The Doors Collection". He's also been touring worldwide with an all-star band playing corporate affairs.

"I suppose my style originated from not being able to pick things up easily. I used to play my own solos rather than copy other people's."
