Fred was born and raised on a cotton and dairy farm in northeast Lousiana. After four years in the Air Force, he joined the Louisian Hayride, playing guitar behind everyone you can imagine. After that, he toured with Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, with Levon Helm and members of what would become The Band. He then went to Nashville and became one of the most highly sought after guitarist ever, playing on hits from Roy Orbison to George Jones to Simon and Garfunkel.
