Steven Tyler

Born: March 26, 1948
New York, NY, USA

Steven Tyler was born a kid with boundless energy. He focused much of that extra energy into learning the drums, but when he heard the vocals of groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, he began to sing. In the 60’s, Tallarico moved to Boston, where he met fellow musicians Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton. They were in a group called the Jam Band, and they were looking for a new vocalist. They added Joey Kramer, a percussion student from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and eventually Brad Whitford would replace rhythm guitarist Ray Tabano, and they re-Christened themselves Aerosmith. Tallarico became Steven Tyler, and his reputation spread throughout the New England states as a sleazy, party-hardy, sexy frontman who could sing his ass off. His outrageous clothes and appearance were reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, and it added a touch of glamour to the band’s appearance.

In 1973, Columbia Records signed Aerosmith, and the band released their self-titled debut album. The band seized a loyal following, and they performed live often to feed their fan’s frenzy. In 1979, however, it all stopped when Perry left the band, and Whitford soon followed. Tyler tried to find suitable replacements for his lost band members, but the new Aerosmith never took off. Tyler was in a whirlwind of drugs, sex, emotional and financial bankruptcy, and the band was going downhill, fast. Fortunately, Perry and Tyler managed to resolve their differences in 1983, and all of the original members came together for a reunion tour the following year. The band collectively decided to kick their drug and alcohol habits, and they were clean by 1987. They have enjoyed many successful years since then, producing such smash albums as Pump, Permanent Vacation, and they have produced many pop hits and movie soundtrack numbers. The main focus for Tyler and Aerosmith nowadays seem to be pop ballads and light-rock tunes, usually formulized for MTV and mainstream radio airplay. Whatever their formula, it seems to work for them because they were just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
