Signifigant Achievements

  • He was the first to add flatted thirds and sevenths (so-called "blue notes") to published compositions.
  • Handy was the first to compose and publish a tune with the word "blues" in it, "Memphis Blues" in 1912.
  • Appears on a U.S. postal stamp with Duke Ellington.
