1981 in London

Grrl Groups

Bananarama started out between prep school friends Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin. Dallin met Siobhan Fahey in college, and the three discovered that they had the same taste in music. For kicks, they started singing cover tunes at parties, and eventually they worked their way into local clubs and taverns. They harmonized well together, and had the dance moves and fashion style to get them noticed. Soon, they caught the eye of ex-Sex Pistol member Paul Cook, and he helped them produce a demo, "Aie A Mwana," which also turned out to be their first single. Cook helped them get a few high profile gigs, and soon they were on club tours, opening for major acts like the Fun Boy Three. They were signed to London Records, and in 1983 they released Deep Sea Skiving, which launched the U.K. chart burners "Shy Boy," and "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." Their U.S. breakthrough didn't come until the following album, 1984's self-titled Bananarama. "Cruel Summer" burned up the charts, being released right in time for the summer, of course. This was followed by the more serious "Robert De Niro's Waiting." After switching to Razor & Tie Records, they released True Confessions, which turned into another smash record on both sides of the Atlantic, although the song "Venus" seemed to carry the album. Unhappy with Razor & Tie, the band switched back to London Records, and released 1987's Wow!, featuring only 4 songs, and no U.S. Top 20 hits. In the same year, Fahey decided to leave the band to marry the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart. She was replaced by Jacquie O'Sullivan, another friend of the girls'. After nearly a 5-year break, the newly formed band released Pop Life in 1991. Within a year after the album was released, however, O'Sullivan exited as well, leaving Woodward and Dallin to move forward as a duo. They released Ultra Violet on the Curb Records label in 1996. Since then, a couple of compilation series have been released, but nothing new is expected to come out.
