Black Flag
Formed: 1977 in Los Angeles, CA
Black Flag formed in a time when the overboard productions of such bands as Steely Dan, Styx and Yes were popular. Black Flag was in direct contradiction with this sound. Raw and heavy, it was California's version of the Ramones, post-punk style. Mixing in bits of diverse styles of music like metal, avante-garde jazz, and spoken-word poetry made Black Flag that much more intriguing. Members of the band varied, and singers quit so often that it wasn't uncommon for members of the audience to hop onstage and take over for the entire gig. In fact, that is how Henry Rollins became the singer of Black Flag. And, though the lineup changed, the fanbase always stayed the same. Black Flag released some historical albums, such as Damaged. | | |
