Backstreet Boys

1992 in Orlando, FL

Boy Groups

Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson were cousins who grew up together singing in church choirs and at family reunions. Born and raised in Kentucky, the two boys learned blues roots and r&b music, and became proficient in harmonizing with each other. Meanwhile, in Florida, A.J. McLean, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter had met each other while auditioning for commercials and local theatre. They discovered their common interests in singing and soul music, and began working together as a trio. They met Kevin Richardson when he moved to Orlando to work at Disney World, and he joined their group. The band officially began in 1992, when Brian Littrell, then a junior in high school, joined his cousin, along with the other three members. The five hit it off instantly, and discovered they had the unique ability to harmonize with each other. After some rehearsal, the group began singing at school functions and small gigs. They gained professional management when they caught the eye of New Kid on the Block managers Johnny and Donna Wright. They broke through in Germany first, and soon their popularity encompassed continental Europe. Soon, they conquered the UK, and were releasing top 20 singles such as "Get Down (You're the One for Me), "We've got it Goin' On" and "I'll Never Break Your Heart." Their first full-length album, the self-titled Backstreet Boys, was released in 1996, but only in Europe. In 1997, Backstreet's Back was also released only in Europe. The single "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" became the hit that would make them popular in the U.S., peaking out at #4 in 1998. They then released their self-titled U.S. debut, which was comprised of tracks from their previous two European albums. The single "I Want it That Way" became a radio staple in 1999, and the album would became the 3rd best selling album of the year. Striking while the iron was still hot, they released Millennium just in time for the new year. In 27 days, they sold two million copies, breaking all kinds of sales records and instantly vaulting the album to multi-platinum status. The hits "I Want it That Way" and "Larger That Life" were in the U.S. and U.K. charts throughout much of late 1999 and early 2000. In November of 2000, the supergroup released Black and Blue.
