Sid Vicious

London, England
taurus
Died: February 2, 1979

Sid was born near London on a Spring day, but didn’t have a happy childhood. His father wasn’t around most of the time, and he ended up dropping out of school at a young age. His mother, Anne Beverley, had a history of heroin abuse herself, and Sid left home to go live on the streets. Much of England was in a state of upheaval, and Sid was in awe of the punk rock music scene that he saw on the streets in London. He began hanging around with the punks, and was soon taken under the wing of Malcolm McLaren. McLaren owned a punk clothing shop in downtown London, and he had started a band called the Sex Pistols. The Pistols were known for their antics, and Sid was an admirer of the Pistols long before McLaren asked him to join as the bass player for the band. Sid was still a teen, but he embodied all of the characteristics of a genuine Sex Pistol. When he met Nancy Spungeon at a friend’s apartment, however, he fell in love with her like a child. From then on, they were inseparable. She was an American groupie who had come from New York with hopes of bedding a famous punk star. Nancy had been working as a prostitute in London, and she had a hefty heroin addiction. Soon, Sid, too, was on heroin, and the rest of the Sex Pistols were under duress. Band members and friends of Sid were constantly pleading with him to get rid of her, but Sid was blinded by his love for her.

The Sex Pistols forced Sid to embark on an American tour without Nancy, but the tour didn’t last long. The band ended up splitting while they were touring the midwest, and Nancy left London to meet Sid in New York. They moved into the Chelsea Hotel in the City, and their relationship took a turn for the worse. Living on heroin, the two began arguing, and their arguments turned violent. On the morning of October 12, the police, while answering a complaint call, found Nancy Spungeon, dead of a knife wound on the bathroom floor. Sid was sitting on the bed with the knife, in a drugged-out haze. The police arrested Sid and charged her with the murder of Nancy Spungeon, but Sid was released on bail. Ten days later, Sid unsuccessfully attempted suicide. After a brief stay in rehab, he was released from the hospital, and he went to stay with his mother in an apartment in New York. One night, his mother went and bought him some heroin, and let him inject himself. It is unknown whether the overdose was accidental or planned, but Sid had been quoted as saying that he wanted to “be with his Nancy.”
