Derek Sherinian

Born: August 25, 1966

Sherinian began playing piano at a young age. He practiced all the time, developing his ear on his own. He also took lessons, and his tastes turned from classical to pop. He was invited to attend the very prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, and attended for three years before leaving for Los Angeles, his dreams in tow. He worked odd jobs for a while, but by the end of 1987, his dreams were beginning to be realized. He was asked to do a national club tour by ex-Hendrix drummer Buddy Miles. He accepted, and toured the U.S. A couple of years later, in 1989, he was asked to tour with Alice Cooper’s band, and he toured with Cooper through two tours. He also toured with KISS, and played on the Kiss Alive III album. In 1994, Sherinian was picked up by Dream Theatre, and he toured with them in support of their Awake album. He was then asked to join the band on a full-time basis, and he did so for four years, and three albums, including Change of Seasons, Falling into Infinity, and Once in a Livetime. Since leaving Dream Theatre, he has formed a band, called Planet X. Planet X also features Australian drummer Virgil Donati and guitar virtuoso Tony MacAlpine. Sherinian has made quite a name for himself in the world of progressive rock, and is known as one of the most talented musicians to come out of the 90’s.
