Tom Morello comes from a culturally diverse and liberated background. His mother joined to forefront of the anti-censorship movement, and his father was a guerilla in the uprising that would free Kenya from British rule. His uncle was the first Prime Minister of Kenya. His first exposure to racism was at age 6. Morello was a smart kid in high school, and well-read in politics. He had alwasy been attracted to bands such as KISS, but it was the Sex Pistols that made him realize he might be able to voice his political and social views through music. After attending Harvard University, he moved to Los Angeles to start a band. Several bands and day jobs later, he met all of the members of Rage Against the Machine through a newspaper ad.
